Established in 2001, The Golf Tournament of Champions is an annual golf tournament taking place in the upper Midwest the weekend after Labor Day.

The original event was an 8-person stroke-play tournament taking place at the home course of our youth, Dwan Golf Course in Bloomington, MN.   The champion of this stroke-play event is awarded the coveted Green Towel, which hangs from the champion’s bag for the ensuing year.  Over the course of the next 16 years, the field has expanded to as many as 17 golfers.

In 2011, the second phase of the GTC was introduced, which was the Gold Towel team event.  Between 2011 and 2017 various changes were made to the format, with the one constant being that the tournament consisted of 36-holes of a team event for the gold towel and 18-holes of stroke play for the green towel.

2018 brings a standardized format to the tournament which will be used for many years to come, so as to bring consistency and continuity to each yearly event.

The tournament will consist of a practice round on Friday, 36-holes of “Ryder Cup” style Gold Towel team event on Saturday, and 18-holes of individual stroke play for the Green Towel on Sunday.
